we have got something similar in Greece
On March 1 the girls wear in their hand a bracelet woven from white and red thread, known as "March", an ancient custom which complied and girls of ancient Athens, and even put it and the statue of the goddess Athena, Sparta and Macedonia. The "March" is thought to protect girls from burning sun.
