I am currently running on a dell intel core 2 duo cpu e4500 @ 2.20GH with 4GB ram with a ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT - I would like to upgrade to a new graphics card and was wondering what i should upgrade to? I am not very computer parts savvy so any help is appreciated

i have a Readon HD 5550 and it works well and plays all the latest game still, its not going to be like a super awesome card and run crysis on high settings, but if you need a card that will do wow, and all games full screen with minimal settings then its a good card for you.

one thing though, are you looking for a full size PCI-e card? or a Half Height to fit into smaller cases?

Also, my computer is a full sized tower - and price i would like to stay between 100-150$ i would like this upgrade to last for about 3years or so.

the Radeon HD 5550 is really a good deal for the price: Around $50-75
the Radeon HD 6850 would do better, but probably isn't worth the: Around $150
I haven't looked at Desktop components in a while... Sry I couldn't be of more help.
Hey CnG how many full minimum settings/size screens of WoW do you run on that card?

Good choice. From the look of the card itself, and the reviews, would run pretty quiet even under heavy loads. Does the inside of your case have the proper air flow for this?
Like with mine I bought a massive card, which in turn blocked most of the air flow coming from the front-back of my Tower since the card was pointed downwards the fan was circulating mostly the same air. A simple hole in the side-view glass + an additional Case fan fixed this problem. Just something to keep in mind.

i have a 16X10 1650X1080 resoultion or something like that, but at most i do 2 WoW's at with minimal settings, and do ok with performance, keep in mind i have a 4 core phenemon at most i would push a readon hd 5550 is 3 or 4 wow's with low settings. if the rest of the system can handle it.

i would say go with something around the HD5550 mark since your bases system (the core 2 duo) is already pretty old, it makes no sense to stick in a really power hungry high end card. a mid level card should provide a good cost to performance ratio, until your ready to upgrade the entire machine. not only that, but my HD5550 is a Low Profile card, and it dose not put out that much heat, and allows good ventilation around it and wont require a PSU upgrade to run.

^^What CnG said is also very correct :D
With the CPU you currently have it's going to bottleneck there, meaning that no matter how much you upgrade your Graphics card, at a point it wont run any better/fast overall because the CPU can't process the game fast enough. It's not a bad idea to upgrade to the graphics card you wanted now, as long as you plan on upping your other components in a timely manner.

and by timely mannor splurging to spend for a new motherboard, processor, ram, case , powersupply, when you get ready to upgrade. since at least the main 3 need to be bought all together if you plan on using them all together.

Yes, if you are going to upgrade your processor, upgrading your motherboard is almost always necessary, most likely you'll want a new case (new MB may not mount in the old one) powersupply because of higher power-demand on newer equipment. And also RAM should always be upgraded before, or during a processor upgrade at least. You don't always need 'more' per-say. Just better quality/ what ddr blah blah computer talk blah blah

Here's my setup:
Core 2 Duo (8600 I think) running at 4.ghz, stock is 3.16 I think
4gb ram
300GB WD Velociraptor
Win 7 64bit
750 watt PS
ATI 4870
I run 2 WOWs fine with mixed settings. Farming account is low settings and the acct I play on is high settings with shadows turned all the way down. I usually have multiple tabs open in Chrome. Sometimes I will have both accounts farming and browse the internet or youtube. If you go with anything above what I have you should be fine to do basic stuff. I'd say overclock your processor if you can, doubtful if it's a Dell. I say go for a ATI card, I just like them better. You can get a 6870 for about $150 or 5770 for around $125. You can go cheaper but might as well get the best you can for your budget since you'd only be saving about $25 bucks. GL

No one is looking at the most important question here:
What do you want to do with it?

- Forget about is lasting for 3 years, there's no one that can tell you what any card's performance will do in 3 years time. But if history is any guide: Any card from 3 years ago will perform marginally compared to anything that's out there right now.
- Forget about the rest of your system. It's good enough for most tasks, woefully inadequate for some. Again; if you want to do those "some" you'll need to upgrade the rest but we can't know that from what you've told us.

So again: What is your intended use?

my setup :

msi radeon 6950 2gb
intel i5 2500k @ 4.0Ghz
8gb ram
asrock extreme 4
1tb HD
120gb SSD

depends on what you want too spend and wich games u wanna play in the future :p
