Is there a limit to how many mails items you have? I know with postal you can refresh it, but is there actually a limit to how many you can have?

no.

The maximum number of messages that a Mailbox can hold is unknown, but the Mailbox will only display the first 50 messages. Any messages over 50 will still exist within the Mailbox, but will not be displayed. To view the messages beyond the first 50, some of the messages will have to be removed (by reading and taking the attachment or by deleting). Once a message has been removed (making a spot available for one of the non-displayed messages), simply close the mail window and reopen the mailbox. (Prior to patch 2.0.10, you would need to logout or talk to an auctioneer)

try it. farm 2 hours thorium, you will get about 50 stacks. list them per 1 ore in AH(12 hours), it will be 1000 auctions. after 12 hours check your mailbox, if you get them all back, mailbox can store more than 1000 mails. if you get less than 1000, you will know how much the mailbox can stroe

I almost can promise you this has been tested with far above 1000 mails
