I'd like to know whether having an authenticator hurts your chance of account recovery should it get banned... (figuring it's much harder to believe you were possibly hacked if you are using an authenticator).

Of course, using complete ignorance of what is going on would still be a viable option... "I don't know why, but I can't login to my WoW account, what's going on???"

Nope it would make no difference as you would be tracked by your IP.
The only way to do it would be to login with a vpn every 2 times to make it seem believable you were getting hacked and had no idea.

Although you can recover a ban anyway as bad bot moves can simply be a human made problem for example running into a stone, 'you hit auto run and went afk' or if your just healing yourself and not fighting 'I was checking my healing rotation' etc

The only problem may be fighting against if a GM has whispered you, although you could say you use chat tabs so the whisper never even appeared and you have a custom UI meaning you never even saw that a GM was whispering you. Then fight off other whispers with BadBoy.

You need to change your play style so you can add excuses to make bot problems more human caused. If you are detected via warden you might aswel not even attempt to get unbanned unless you get a lazy GM on the phone.

Although honorbuddy has never faced warden bans and if they did it would not just be you who would get banned, everybody would.

Just be smart and you wont get banned in the first place, if you get suspended that is a quick way of figuring out, 'Ok they caught me and gave me a 2nd chance' or 'I should quit while I am ahead or be more careful next time.'

I hope this information helps you.

Also more on your question, authenticator can be hacked also by a hacker sniffing your packets and stealing your login session.

They can steal your login session, but you would know(since the account can't be online twice.) So you would disconnect.
Even if that wasn't a problem, who would use such methods to hack a simple wow account, when you can get real money instead?

Yeah it would log them in and log you out. You would be surprised people can make a lot more money in a much safer way by hacking WoW accounts then selling the items for gold, wiping the Gbank then leaving. The fact is they are probably behind a proxy chain so you have next to no chance of tracking them.

Many botters will not contact blizzard as it puts their account under the radar for a GM, they may only do so if characters were deleted. Even then a botter would bot them up, it does not take us long.

Basically an authenticator can still get you hacked so that shouldn't hurt your chances, although having an authenticator makes it much harder to appeal a ban, it should still work.

"I was hacked"
"By the registered IP?"
"Yes!"
"Account Unbanned!"

That is how most lazy GM's work now, so it will probably get unbanned anyway. Just be careful and don't get banned in the first place.

The problem is weak passwords and download of suspicious software :-)

The later combined with Bad protection (We all know what can happen if we have a broken condom)

Should never really need an authenticator if you ask me.

The mouth and back door are natures condoms :)
