As title says... i am trying to figure out if the profile was at fault here or something else.
Please post what profile you were using.

Used semi private (lots of added pathways, different waypoints and random starting profile) based on CIGARCC's A3 champ hunting. Dont think the ban cause lays in the profile used.

[EDIT]
If you ask me it is one or more stupidly small behavioural things that got detected over quite a long time. Some examples:
- bots (good as) never pickup a white item (due to a missclick).
- bots pickup pots till they have 99 (or sometimes 100 and the old ones up to 101).
- bots target mobs so fast that it seems they can almost "predict" where monsters have teleported or will land (in case of flyers)
- bots/profiles have always the same waittime after using a TP before they go walk in town
- bots always stash a "typical" kind of items (depending on the gearscore). When the player checks the stash, items that are worthless get removed and sold manually... over and over and over again but mostly in between at least a few hours (we got to sleep dont we? ;)
- bots rarely pause while doing their running. If they do pause its always due to a stuck. They tend to run around a little, backtrack and then pickup where they left off. Very typical also.
- bots always identify ONLY if they have a full inventory (townrun). Now if a legendary mace drops would you, if you played by hand, NOT go ahead and see if its a good quality Echoing Fury right after you picked it up just to take a quick peek out of curiousity? Never ever??

And the list goes on and on and on I guess...

Now only one of these typical things is ofcoz not by far enough to get you banned. But check/measure a lot of the above things over quite some time and well.... Blizz sure is stupid nowadays but not THAT stupid hehe. After some weeks you can clearly see a pattern wich I believe is not shown or much much less shown when the game is played by hand.
O and for those that think this is impossible to keep track: remember its all small behaviour things like 1 variable to keep track how many pots, 1 variable to count how many white items picked at what time/date, 1 variable to keep track how much time after a TP before next action etc.
Graph them out after someone is flagged and there's the proof. Flagging can be automated by only keeping track of 1 or 2 particular small things.

(just my thoughts)

Profiles, error report folder, D3 inspector, Standalone plugins (like YAR), using/not using VMWare, different IPs, same IP for multiple accounts, multiple accounts per PC, hours played per day, days played per week, total gold farmed, total gold sold/traded away, : none of these reasons warranted the bans.

There are 2 likely reasons I could think feasible:
1. One of the latest mini-patches included something in the client to change the way they detect third party programs.
2. A new server side behavioural analysis method, that detects how and what our characters do, then matches it to their profile, and bans the hits.

The second one would be hell to detect and plug for DB's team.
Anyway, this is a good time as ever to take a long vacation, thanks for all the fish, and see you later :)

yes i wrote it myself from scratch

it did show in buddystat once in top 10 of gold picking lol.
and ... banned

I also used semi-private profiles with lots modification in profile sequence and randomization. It helped me from PL1 to PL98. Damn, never had a chance to capture that PL100 moment.
