Curious about the bot

So after doing a little digging into botting for D3, I came across a few posts about how bots work and how they control the game. I have a few questions that I'm wondering if anyone knows the answers to.

1)
Is the bot coded to be like a hack or like a macro? I.E: Internal, hooks into the game and controls it like a hack would, No keyboard/mouse simulation, but basically telling the game what to do while skipping the input part of it or like a macro where it simulates key presses? (My guess is hack because of how it levels paragon points without opening the paragon menu, scraps trash gear without clicking the buttons, moves around without using the mouse and uses skills without pressing the skill buttons)

What is the longest time anyone has gone unpunished while using the bot? A reddit post I found mentioned that the bot is notorious for being caught and banned. I'm curious as to how long people are able to use it without being punished and if anyone has used it and not been caught out in a banwave with others.

I feel like I probably should've asked these questions BEFORE buying lifetime, but whatever. Just curious as to how broke I'll be with buying new copies.

the bot is awsome you can do other things in windows mode no the bot is not with input keybinds that you need to let it run or the keybinds messes up like pirox back in the days but if you wanna buy lifetime you should do it now because in june lifetime wil end and only people that bought lifetime befor june wil keep their lifetime keys

I've had 2 accounts since before the RMAH was removed, one got perma'd a long time ago, the other one I still bot on every season, but I never go crazy and bot 24/7, and I usually only bot for the first 2-3 weeks of a season before I get bored.

The bot is more "like a hack" than a macro. However, afaik it uses blizzard's built in API to send commands as opposed to injecting memory. It does read memory, but that is essentially harmless.
