Been gone for a while, banwaves?

I've been gone from WoW for I guess half a year and heard there were some big banwaves some time ago. Lucky for me I wasn't one of the banned people.

Now my question is very simple.

I know botting was never safe, but is it even more unsafe right now, maybe new methods of blizzard? Or exactly the same as it was before?
Some people told me blizzard had found new ways of detecting bots, but these people don't even bot afaik so I don't immediately believe them.
