Anyone managed GPU passthrough for the VM on a Windows 7 host?

I think i already asked this question a few month ago... ;)

Anyway, what would be a good hardware setup for 8-10 VMs? I really need to do upgrade some parts of my machine. (especially the CPU)

And i just want to try it without nasty OC'ing, FPS Limiting or playing aroudn with Linux. All these things can produce more troubles than it helps. If you don't know exactly what you do.


Split the VM's to a few smaller SSD's?
Split the VMs via 4 Core i7-6700K ? or AMD with 8core?
MSI Board?
No need to invest in a nice GPU?
Which WLAN adapter you recommend?

You`ll need one of those Nvidia grid GPUs, or 1 GPU for each VM for GPU passtrough
 
oh. thats not worth it.

i am just trying and trying to find out what's the main trigger to increase performance with multiple VMs.

somewhere in my system there's a bottleneck that prevents me from running 4+ VMs smooth.

Is it my GPU? (but it's not used via VM... so i shouldn't worry about it)
Is it my Motherboard?
Is it my CPU? Is AMD better designed for splitting Power to a few VMs?
Is it something else? Win7, PoE, ISP connection?

The Bot works good, but it's sometimes a pain to watch the stuttering and lagging (depending on map/ground effects)

I don't wanna buy a new AMD 8core, new Mobo and find myselve left with the same crap performance.
 
It`s most likely your CPU that`s bottlenecking. Also AMD isn`t any good in that kind of virtualization, you`d be better off with Intel with HT.

What you can try is: Lower FPS with something like dxtory, set POE to High priority, in VM set 1 CPU 2 Core per VM, make sure you have enough RAM, lower POE graphic via Config file.

i already used dxtory a few months ago. it was no big win as far as i remember, but ok...

in terms of CPU:
even if i manage to sell my old, used i7 3770k vs ~230€ (which i doubt, maybe no one will buy it) i need to invest ~150€ for upgrade to i7-6700k.
I am not sure if it's worth the money.

Gigabyte GTX 970 WindForce 3X OC

nothing special but not that bad...

Of course i could upgrade, but is it a big win?
At least i could stop the nasty "display driver has stopped responding and resolved" bug with happens like once or twice per month. (ending up with blackscreen VMs)

I can continue the story with my SAMSUNG 850 EVO 120GB SSD.
~3 years old.

OK for 3 PoE VMs, but too small for ~6 PoE VMs.
Therefore i have to switch to my HDD.

Upgrade possible. Big win?
I am not sure if one SSD is even happy with serving 6+ VMs alone.

Well if you're looking for a cheap way to "upgrade" your farm, consider not using VMs.
 
@Tonyx: well, i guess i can try sandboxie, but as far as i know it's not working with VPNs and maybe higher risk.

That's not "higher risk" sandbox doesn't spoof the MAC address.

but it's working with VPNs if set up correctly

System Security > Windows Firewall > Advanced Settings > Inbound Rules > New Rule > Program > This program path > Block the connection > Everything ticked minus Public > Set your VPN connection to public.
Repeat everything to outbounds rules.

My tinfoil hat prevents me from trying to bot without the VMs, but eventually I will make the leap and hope for the best. About GPUs and VMware it wont happen, unless you have 1 gpu for every guest OS, just get some nice CPU and you wont have performance problems.

Thanks for the guide botelho ! I also think VM are best because of the MAC address change but I'll also try sandboxie for 2 bots.
 
How is it with that sandboxie? It is really reliable? About pass-through for VM it is possible with 1 gpu shared for all VMs with XenServer and adequate software.
