2 chrs to inferno. Now they are back to the start of hell level ???

I had 2 level 60 chrs and some friends killed hell diablo and they were in Inferno.
I logged out and a day or 2 later went back on those chrs and they are at the start of hell.
one did not do any hell questing but the other one had done thru act 2.
now both are at the start of hell and no quest completed.

WTF is going on?
