You're right. I still think most developers prioritise fixing bugs for the most recent version of the platform first. I'm not saying they will ignore fixing this bug, I'm just saying it may take some time.
I guess your best bet is to update to windows 10, though I know this may not be desired for a lot of people :) My guess is that this is a low priority since win7 is such an old version.
It would be really handy if the output stating that there may have been a patch could be more descriptive. Maybe reffer to a forum post where the user could read about the update process you just mentioned @Thecamel. The best case scenario would ofcourse be a link to a page that shows the status...
