We think a few thousand accounts were banned on the 18th. For now, we do not know exactly what went wrong. Customers want us to say if it was software detection or something else that got them banned. We don't have access to that information but this is how we are thinking now.

Software detection is 100% bans and all users get hit at same time. We last had that on September 3 2009 with the old Gatherbuddy and no users survived. This set of bans was probably not detection based as there are just not enough bans being reported. Oru development accounts have not been banned. Lots of users have lost only some of their botting accounts. Also, Warden hasn't been sending reports that could catch Demonbuddy users.

Behaviour detection can be where Blizzard looks at how often you kill a certain NPC or how often you use Town Portal or some such algorithm. Behaviour detection tends to be a lot less accurate so Blizzard will store up a few hundred bans and unload all at once to scare people off botting. This set of bans is too big to be just behaviour but too small to be detection.

Our conclusion is that right now, Blizzard has the advantage of surprise. We don't know for certain the basis of the bans yet but we do have an opinion. Obviously we can't publish what we think and we also can't assume we are right. So we have to be ultra-cautious and do a set of simulations to ensure that Demonbuddy appears as human as possible to the D3 servers.

For example, now we are doing things manually and seeing what packets are sent to the D3 server. Then we do the same thing with the bot. We compare the packet streams and are making sure they match up. Things like the ability to start a game on a quest you don't have will be removed. Most of this will not be necessary but we are doing it to reduce any future risk as well as address what has already happened.

Once this is done, the bot will be as safe as we can make it and we will re-open auth. We hope it will be later today but it could take until Saturday.

Question: will it be "safe" to bot when Demonbuddy auth comes back?
Answer: it will be as safe as we can make it. Never bot on an account you would cry over losing. Farming gold is always going to be risky and you have to do your own risk/reward assessment.

Thanks for the update! ordered my copies and ready to roll

I'd be suprised if you found something in the packet upstream the bot sends, probably what Blizzard is doing as well. Having a legit player and their own bot and compare the packets. I guess you just re-check, because if you didn't check that to begin with, would be a huge flaw. Anyways, too bad we can't really help you out with gathering information. I think you are doing a good job.

Thanks for the update. Looking forward to getting up and running in the new year. Just FYI I'm sure there are a tonne of botters like myself who did not both to post a ban report as there were so many people banned I felt it was not necessary.

While you are at it, can we get a better DungeonExplorer ?

Thank you

Thank you Hawker for updated information. Just don't rush too much. Better triple check it my friend, and then open/release it. Take your time, we CAN wait!

Keep up the good work, you guys are amazing!
Happy holidays, christmas and new year 2013 !

This set of bans was probably not detection based as there are just not enough bans being reported.
Is any private way to ban reporting?
Also, fyi, I have all game stats for my banned and survived accounts (ingame time, death, gold amount etc).

Hawker - Thanks for a good follow up.

Add in opening inventory before IDing please! So I can remove my tinfoil hat

Good thought process. Hawker and the rest of the DEVS, Thanks and happy Holidays. Nice to see updated info.

thanks for info, i love you guys for talking with us <3<3<3<3

i also dont assume a software detection since i havent lost any accounts, but still nice that you make sure anything is how its supposed to be

Looking forward to beeing able to bot again.

Willing to wait - keep it as safe as you can. We don't mind the extra waiting time.

Questions from a newbie here.

I got 1/1 banned, main account, my first and only decent char, a monk. Was a little upset but I knew the danger.

I bought another key online (legit-worked) and now i have a fresh copy on the same email/account as the one I got banned.

Question 1 : Is it 'safe' to continue botting on that account or better to create seperate Bnet accounts for each new key you purchase?
Question 2 : Which is the fastest way to lvl up and gear up a barbarian for botting purposes? (links to any guides within the forum are welcome)
Question 3 : Supposing I kept the already suspicious account 'clean' from botting, and only used it as a mule for RMAH purposes, would that ensure its future? I mean can I use this architecture to keep the current account clean (since it's already linked with paypal and all) and bot with other ones and treat them as expendables?

Thanks in advance buddies :)

I dont know if any dev gonna read it but I have a info that might useful. You talking about patern and I have seen a little one that should not happen.

I started bot my level 1 char and after play for few minutes I have got an error. Ok, I restarted DB and for my surprise the profile told my char to do something that it was not supposed to be able to do, use the town portal spell. What I mean is that this spell was not enable on my menu yet and even like this the bot used.

Of course, I am not saying this cause all those bans, I am just saying that this is not natural. Maybe its a good "pattern" to check and be changed.

Hope this info helps somehow.

Yea, I got a little worried when I saw a profile try to go to a WP that the game didn't have and the game would disconnect.

Have you guys attempted to look within the Diablo 3 client itself for detection? I remember about 5 years ago when botting on WoW using MMOGlider there was a banwave that they added the detection to the WoW Client and NOT Warden. They stored up accounts for about 2 weeks that were botting and then unleashed the banwave.

Just an idea and wanted to throw it out there if you guys haven't looked into this.
