How to run D3 in a virtual machine?

I'm sure there are people here doing it, I've seen some references to it in other posts I've read. I want to set up d3 to run in a virtual machine. I've tried vmware and vbox and can't get either to work. vmware straight up wouldn't support 3d, and in vbox, although I have 3d acceleration and everything enabled d3 simply crashes when I start it.

So was hoping someone could tell me how they got it to work. Which virtual machine software did you use? What OS did you use in the vm? Any special settings that you had to use to get it to run?

Thanks!

vmware works just fine, get workstation 8 , install windows 7 , xp or whatever you prefer, and when you're done install vmware tools inside the VM and you're good to go

Why do you need to run it in a VM?

Anyway this sounds crazy but I run DB and D3 off a Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit machine. I connect to it on my Mac whenever I'm outside using Teamviewer, allows me to monitor it well. Lololol.

Is there some benefit to running it on VM versus simply doing multiple instances straight from your desktop?

Why run in vmware? It draws way to much resources for no reason..

Just run it on your pc? IF you're scared of getting caught because of thinking they may snagg u via IP use a Proxy.

No, VMWare gives no benifit at all. it actually takes away resources from you. Scared of using Same ip? Pop a proxy on the exe file using a proxy tunneling program. etc etc You actually LOOSE performance using vmware.

ofc you loose performance, its a virtual machine, either way, its a genuine way to split your bots if you have enough cpu power and ram for it. All the vm's are seen as a different pc, something you cannot achieve just changing your ip via proxy.

Got a link to such a tunneling program? I would like to have each of my instances login w/ it's own proxy.

Thanks

I'm fully aware of the pros and cons of a virtual machine. The performance is a non issue on my machine. I want a second instance completely separate from my regular play instance. Proxifier will be set up to run on the virtual machine at all times to route ALL traffic through another IP address. Unless bots simply don't run well on the copy of d3 in the virtual machine this is the way I want to set it up. I don't want any confusion or chance of accidentally logging into the wrong account that doesn't go through a proxy on my normal desktop.

it runs just fine inside the vm, you just have to install vmware tools in the guest OS in order to have 3d support.

It runs ok with VM I did it for weeks with immortal and for a few days with DB

  1. The only thing that would be passed along IF blizzard even did checks for it would be MAC Address which I doubt they would even collect. So no point in vmware at all.
  2. Proxycap/Proxifier is registered to the executable file so each time that exe is ran it will be on a proxy. and when ARELog comes out hopefully we can ask them to add a load a specific EXE path this will make sure it always logs with the same profile each load up / restart with proxy attached.
  3. The performance loss is quiet considerable since it will chew into your GPH/Load times, I have tested, 120gig SSD OCZ 300/400 Read/write - AMD 8Core Bulldozer 3.8ghz OC Watercooled - 16gigs Ram @1666mhz. -Edit: Graphics: GTX460 OC'ed aswell.

I'm running my bot on VMware WorkStation. You know why? I want to play Assassin's Creed. Their game can't be played in windows mode, and in fullscreen it forces the bot to hault processes. I tried just about everything to make AC work in windows mode or for the bot to work with AC in fullscreen; nothing. I still have 500 gph running my bot in a VM, and while 8gb of RAM makes using SQL Server or other programs a bit sketchy, it works just fine.

**Edit** There is no difference in my gph running the bot in a VM then on my desktop.

vmware = emulated onboard graphics you wont beable to load that many clients

Why risk the fact that they could and may do mac address checks? And if I want to play my normal account and bot account simultaneously why risk accidentally logging into the wrong one and getting the ip addresses linked?

Once I get it set up and actually running in a vm I'll see how the performance is, but the reqs of running the vm don't even make a dent on my system so if it runs acceptablly in the vm then there is no reason for me to not do it that way.

For the record: Intel Core I7 960x OC'd to 5.2ghz (water cooling naturally) with 64 gb of ram, running on a 240gb ocz revo x2 (740mb read / 720 mb write) and a 7970 graphics card. My machine laughs at virtual machines, I regularly run 2 or 3 at a time for my programming purposes (I code cross platform software, so test in linux, windows, and os x).

Just an update. Got it to work easily on Workstation 8, thanks for that suggestion (I was trying vmware server previously when I tried vmware).

The performance is nearly as good as on my native desktop. A slight loss in fps when first engaging a large group of mobs, which I countered by simply lowering the graphics settings a little. With all settings on medium it sustains 65 fps.

I think that will work just fine!

You will use more resources btw. D3 at best uses 8% of my CPU per window while VM ware will use a consistent 20%.

Buzzard has already publicly endorsed multi-boxing....from the same PC and same IP.
